Travel Information

The conference will take place in Magdeburg – a city that is located not only in the center of Germany but also in the center of Europe. Magdeburg is the capital of the German state of Saxony-Anhalt. The Elbe River flows directly through the city that is one of the oldest in Germany. It is a significant industrial, scientific, and cultural hub – well-known for its historical Romanesque cathedral, its technical universities and modern research institutes, and its role in European history. One of the city’s most famous sons is Otto von Guericke — a German politician, jurist, physicist, and inventor. He is best known for his experiments on air pressure using the Magdeburg Hemispheres.
As the city of Magdeburg is located centrally, it is easy to reach not only from within Germany but also from the rest of Europe and most countries worldwide.
… getting here by plane?
You’ll find a number of airports all over Germany that may be more or less convenient for you if you come from abroad. The nearest airports are:
- the airport in Berlin (BER), which is about 130 km from Magdeburg,
- the airpot in Hannover (HAJ) with about 135 km to Magdeburg, and
- the airport Leipzig/Halle (LEJ) being approximately 100 km from Magdeburg.
While one of the largest airport of our country is with 315 km further away, the airport Frankfurt Main (FRA) is also one of the largest airports in the country with connections to almost all countries worldwide.

.. getting here by train?
While Magdeburg does not have an international airport, the city is a traditional railway hub with very good train connections to Berlin, Hannover, the airport Leipzig/Halle as well as Frankfurt Main.
If you want to plan your trip before landing in Germany, please check out the official webpage of the German railway company. Tickets must be purchased either online or at a local train station – not inside the trains.
As destination station we would like to recommend „Magdeburg Hbf“. This is the main station in the city center with good connections via tram to almost every part of the city.
Of course, the German raileay network has also links to other European countries and cities: There are, for example long-distance train connections from Paris, Prague, and Brussels with one change only along the trip.

… getting here by car?
Alternatively, you can drive to Magdeburg by car as Magdeburg has motorway access to the Autobahn A2 and A14. The A2 starts in Berlin passes Magdeburg and crosses almost the entire country from east to west crossing also Hannover. The A14 comes from Leipzig and Halle, then passes Magdeburg and leads further north. Due to the intersection of different motorways all over Germany, even a car ride from the airport Frankfurt Main with more than 400 km takes only a good 4 hours.
The conference hotel offers a limited number of outside parking spots. For further directions please check their official webpage and in case of questions contact them directly.
… getting around?
Alternatively, Magdeburg has a very well-developed local public transport. In particular, the central station has a direct tram connection to the conference hotel: Tram number 6 brings you from the central station exit „Kölner Platz“ in about 15 minutes directly to the final stop Herrenkrug. The hotel is just 250 meters away.
For details on the public transport please check the official webpage (in German only).
